THE main source of power in China remains coal. To ensure a reliable source of coal for the future requires an efficient use of existing resources for maximum recovery. Open-pit coal mining is still a significant part of the industry in China and, in some areas, underground mining only accounts for about 30 percent of production. A second point is the need for controlled development using productive mining methods while maintaining a high level of safety. Typically, only two bulk explosive types have been utilised in Chinese coal operations: ANFO and IRECO emulsion. Orica is introducing multiple bulk products with a range of energies and properties to match the requirements of the mine. This includes the Energan range of explosives, which are almost twice as powerful as ANFO.
