Effect of Oxygen Adsorption on Polaron Conduction in Nanometer-Scale Nb5+-, Fe3+-, and Cr3+-Doped SrTiO3 Thin Films

摘要

In this study, the effect of oxygen (O-2) adsorption on polaron conduction in nanometer-scale Nb5+-, Fe3+-, and Cr3+-doped SrTiO3 thin films was investigated. The SrTiO3-based thin films were epitaxially grown onto SrTiO3(001) single-crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). It was found that polaron diameter decreases owing to O-2 adsorption; this can be understood by assuming that O-2 adsorbates induce local distortions of TiO6 unit cells, at which conduction electrons are frequently trapped. Furthermore, the polaron diameter of Sr(Ti, Nb)O-3 and Sr(Ti, Fe)O-3 exhibited less dependence on O-2 concentration than that of Sr(Ti, Cr)O-3; this can be explained by the shielding of electron-phonon interaction by doped electrons in Sr(Ti, Nb)O-3, and by the electronic structure of Sr(Ti, Fe) O-3.
