A study is conducted to consider more specifically how magma buoyancy can produce the stress conditions which initiate collapse. Through a simple analysis, the influence of magma buoyancy on the pressure within a magma chamber, and the resulting perturbation of the crustal stress field, before and during an eruption are determined.
