All indications to the contrary, today's engines are not designed to last forever. After so many thousands of miles, use (and abuse) inevitably start taking their toll on components. Cylinder heads often require guide and seat work to restore compression and oil control. For many engine builders, cylinder head work continues to be big business. In fact, according to Engine Builder's 2005 Machine Shop Market Profile, 41 percent of gas and 54 percent of diesel engine builders' business comes from servicing cylinder heads. One of the most important aspects of doing this work is the valve job that is performed. Do it properly and profits as well as a good reputation for doing quality work are likely to come your way - do it poorly and the job is surely on its way back to you.
