Stopping or starting up a single electrolysis cell in a primary aluminium smelter without interrupting the power supply to the other cells in the potline is like replacing a carriage of an express train while the train is still travelling at high speed. When an individual electrolysis cell needs to be started up, shut down or taken off load for maintenance, the traditional approach has been to switch off power to the whole potline. Cell technology, developed by China's Zhengzhou Zhongshi Cell Technology Co. Ltd, has made it possible to take reduction cells off load or start them up without interrupting the power supply to the rest of the potline.
