paraRickmers Line, Hamburg, Germany was planning to build new ships, undertaking the Rickmers Shanghai newbuilding project from China. The company was expected to build nine new vessels under a $270 million contract signed for such a project. The first ship, Rickmers Hamburg, was developed and sailed on its first visit to Europe, sailing from Shanghai through Masan, South Korea. It had completed the Rickmers - Tokyo and Rickmers Singapore, while planning to build the remaining five vessels in 2003. Two ships were being built at Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing in China, while five ships were built at Xiamen and two more at Shanghai Shipyard. All the vessels were to be equipped with heavy cargo-handling equipment, while retaining the basis design. They had an overall length of 192.9 meters, a molded breath of 27.8 meters, and a molded depth of 15.5 meters.
