On a proposal from ISIRI (ISO member for the Islamic Republic of Iran), ISO/TC 217, Cosmetics, was established in 1998, with its secretariat assigned to Iran. This is the first ISO technical committee proposed by a developing country member, and one of the best recent examples of a developing country undertaking to run a secretariat. Iran is anything but a newcomer to the world of cosmetics, as described by Mojdeh Rowshan Tabari, Secretary of the new committee. And a big programme has been drawn up and is already underway within TC 217. Below she describes why Iran's industry encouraged ISIRI to take on the secretariat, and why there is such a demand for international standards in the field in her country.
