Much has been said recently about international standards. As Mr. Raymond Scbonfeld pointed out in the ISO Bulletin June 2001, the WTO (World Trade Organization) "is no nearer to resolving the argument about whose international standards should be acceptable in technical regulation under the TBT agreement". What seems clear at this point is that any international standards organization that wishes to obtain that recognition must comply with the following WTO statement: "… Tangible ways of facilitating developing countries participation in international standards development should be sought...". Today it appears that the European Union arid the USA are 'fighting" each other as Mr. Schonfeld stated, to impose their standards model without considering the needs of Developing Countries (DC).There is a growing new awareness of the importance of involving and getting the commitment of developing countries in the standardization process. As of today, the participation of these countries in ISO's work is almost negligible, and the standards bodies of developing countries barely count in the writing of its standards. Often the national standards bodies in developing countries don't have the capabilities and/or the resources to participate, but very often they also lack the support of their governments to be more active in the international standards arena.
