Tesco's announcement, that it was to commit pound 500 million towards reducing the price of 3,000 lines, including milk, bread, fruit and vegetables, has been received with predictably mixed reviews, especially from rivals. Sainsbury's were first offthe starting block, closely followed by Asda and Morrison's. However, while hard-pressed shoppers may have greeted Tesco's opening salvo, particularly in the light of the unexpectedly high inflation data released during the month, others may have received the news of an impending supermarket price war with mixed feelings. Farmers in general and livestock producers in particular may have thought 'Here we go again', immediately, the question arises as to from where the pound 500 million committed by Tescoto reducing checkout prices will come: Tesco's shareholders, internal cost cutting or Tesco's farmer suppliers? Compounders, as major input suppliers to livestock farmers, have a significant interest in how Tesco or their rivals intend to fund the price war. Roger Dean has been studying the underlying data.
