ISO standards are as a rule reviewed every five years, and the requirement for ISO Business Plans on top of the renewed imperative for market relevance for standards have made this review more crucial than ever.ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 47, chemistry, is going through the process of analysing the business needs of the chemical sector in so far as this relates to its needs for standards. As a first step in this far-reaching study, it has carried out a review of the complete collection of standards for which it is directly responsible (i.e. not including those of its subcommittees). An initial outcome of this review indicates that the greater part of its catalogue of International Standards - in particular those addressing requirements for chemicals - no longer meet the needs of the market. TC 47 considers it is therefore appropriate to propose the withdrawal of 442 standards.
