About a third of the aluminium processed in western Europe is used in the transport sector. It this, the automobile industry is by far the largest consumer of aluminium, so automobile development is of the greatest interest to the aluminium industry. Every two years the International Motor Show (IAA) gives important indications of the current developments. An outstanding trend of automobile development has already long become perceptible: the trend towards ever more intensive lightweight construction. Beginning with top-category vehicles, weight-saving as one of the principal aims of development has now spread throughout the range of current models. That trend spells a hopeful future for the aluminium industry.
