Effect of Purification Treatments on the Properties of Linters of Different Cotton Varieties

摘要

Cotton linters recovered by mechanical delinting of ginned cottonseeds of seven varieties were cleaned mechanically. The cleaned linters samples were purified by kiering employing 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 concentrations of sodium hydroxide. Kiering loss values ranged from 6.6 to 13.1 . Whiteness of kiered samples as measured by reflectance values varied from 50.3 to 67.4 while degree of polymerization ranged from 2250 to 2901. Kiered linters were bleached with hypochlorite at three different pH values viz. 8.4, 9.0 and 10.0. Reflectance values of bleached samples varied from 80.1-91.1 while wide variations in degree of polymerization (DP) values were observed and it ranged from 1292 to 2202. Bleached linters of Bikaneri Narma variety were found to have highest DP values whereas MCU 5 variety showed highest reflectance values. In general, bleaching at pH 10 resulted in better retention of DP and higher reflectance. Marked varietal differences in response of linters to purification conditions were observed.
