In the year ended 30 Nov 2009, the prices of platinum and palladium rose by 56% and 117%, respectively, as a result of increased demand for use in automotive catalytic converters. Two exchange-traded funds launched in the US on 8 Jan 2010 for the direct purchase of the metals attracted $486 M of investment by 29 Jan 2010, indicating that prices are likely to continue rising. As shown graphically, the prices of gold and silver rose by 24% and 50%, respectively, in the year ended 30 Nov 2009, but prices have since fallen slightly.
