When it comes to the competitiveness of companies, then besides factors such as quality and cost the environment-friendliness of products has become a consideration not to be underestimated. Relevant to this is the 3-year "Praeventum" project promoted by the Federal Ministry of Training and Research and overseen by the DLR - Deutsche Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Centre for Aerospace). The project sets out to analyse the complete life cycle of a product, from the design stage, through production, use and maintenance, to eventual disposal, from the standpoint of environmentally relevant factors. Measures to reduce stressing of the environment should emerge from this. Four project partners will combine their efforts to build up a picture of the structure of a distributed product-value chain comprising the activities of suppliers, manufacturers, users, maintenance and disposal.
