In expanding the production of primary aluminium by its Siberian smelters Rusal aimed to change its product mix, specifically to develop value added products - high-quality billets and slabs of doped 3000, 5000, 6000, 8000 series alloys. With this objective in view the Engineering and Technology Centre (ETC) of Rusal developed projects for the Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, Novokuznetsk and Sayanogorsk smelters to modernize production capacities by purchasing state-of-the-art casting equipment manufactured by leading Western companies. This has allowed the smelters to increase the fraction of higher-value-added products up to 50.
