This systematic review summarises the effects of different anti-lipidaemic treatments and diets on total mortality in placebo-controlled clinical trials. Inclusion was restricted to trials with at least 1000 people per group and with follow-up for at least six months. These studies represent about 1% of all trials comparing lipid-lowering interventions with placebo or usual care. The vast majority of studies have evaluated the effects of interventions on blood lipid levels or other surrogate endpoints. The review provides a valuable comparison of the strength of evidence for different lipid-lowering interventions on mortality.
