This contribution describes the one-coil furnaces manufactured by Otto Junker GmbH for the annealing of aluminium strip coils, and compares and assesses the various furnace designs and their technical conversion. Besides describing the most important technical highlights (coil handling, furnace design and automation), particular attention is given to the incorporation of a mathematical process model by means of which the process conduct can be adapted to the determinant coil data in an optimum way, leading to a reduction of annealing time. The description is supplemented with comparison values of annealing processes in the chamber furnace unit supplied to Norandal (USA), which demonstrate the performance and possible uses of the process model used. In aluminium strip coil production processes, chamber furnaces are used for the necessary heat treatments for homogenising, intermediate annealing or final condition annealing. With such units annealing can be carried out automatically under inert gas or in the ambient atmosphere in accordance with predetermined heating and cooling programmes. Over the past 10 years Otto Junker has supplied this market segment with more than 40 multiple-coil furnace plants for noted customers all over the world. In such heat treatment units several coils can be annealed, depending on the capacity of the heat treatment unit and how full it is.
