Expansion and diversification for many Irish contractors means looking to the hills and skylining. However, as Eoghan Daly reports, considerable investment and significant labour requirements are the down side of this type of operation. For MichaelStandish, already running a harvester and forwarder on thinnings work, skylining seemed an obvious expansion route particularly given the large amount of steep terrain remaining unharvested at local level. By the same token, however, countless contractors have turned their backs on skylining because of poor rates, so what urged Michael to take the plunge?
