Semi-closed greenhouses are a hot issue because of the energy savings they can achieve. However, semi-closed greenhouses require many technical adaptations and are very expensive. In many countries, they are not feasible because building aquifers is impossible. Dutch consultancy Climeco devised a simple alternative which will save almost the same amount of gas for a lower investment. Semi-closed greenhouse concepts have proved that energy consumption in greenhouse horticulture can be drastically reduced. However, to make production cost-effective the yields must also rise considerably. At the moment, growers are failing to sufficiently reach this increase in practice - the 20% rise necessary to compensate for the investment is only rarely achieved.The main obstacle appears to be fully utilising the advantages of the cooling capacity in the summer. And different cultivation methods have to be used. There is plenty of interest in the concept of semi-closed greenhouses, but in many regions outside the Netherlands it is impossible to build aquifers due to the local soil conditions. Consequently, semi-closed greenhouses are only within reach for a limited group of growers, who also have to be willing to make substantial investments.
