The increasing use of light metal components in automobile construction entails the use of surface technology as well. A new process by AHC Oberflachentechnik serves to protect magnesium surfaces. In the autumn of 1931 the automobile manufacturers Horch presented one of the world's first mass produced 12-cylinder engines. Around 70 years later Audi, with its historical roots in the traditional Horch company, again brought a 12-cylinder engine onto the market with its A8 L 6.0. Besides its driving performance, this limousine is notable for its forward-looking lightweight construction technology. As the company's only 12-cylinder model, it makes use of the Audi Space-Frame ASF mode of aluminium. Also made of aluminium are the wheel supports, the front and rear axle control arms, all the brake calipers, the bumpers and the wheels.
