The Netherlands are the worlds largest exporter of fresh vegetables, exporting to 158 different countries with a total value of 4,8 billion euros. Dutch growers produce 4.6 million tons of vegetables each year on about 100,000 hectares, of which 4,800ha under glass. But it's not all about volume. With continuing innovation the Dutch try to stay a step ahead of their competitors. In a land with 16.7 million people living on 41,528 km2, there is not much room for large scale agriculture. Although it has not always been that busy, the need for intensification came early. High land prices forced Dutch farmers to get the most out of their animals and fields. And that has been a continuing search ever since.
