ALGAE WERE BY FAR THE HOTTEST TOPIC among the myriad biofuels presentations at BIO 2008.The international conference attracted more than 20,000 scientists,venture capitalists,engineers and power brokers(many there for pharmaceutical interests)to San Diego,Calif.,for a week-long convention in June.Unlike ethanol,biofuel derived from algae was hailed as having the potential to directly replace crude oil,sliding easily into existing pipeline infrastructure since it mimics the molecular properties of oil.Scientists said algal biofuels would be a huge net gain when it comes to greenhouse-gas emissions and energy use throughout the production cycle.
