The recently developed 8130.5 resistance measurement system, from AESA, incorporates a specially tested cable grip method of operation that locally breaks own the insulating oxide layer on aluminium strands without damaging the cable. Pressure is applied by gradually varying the differential pressure along four radii spaced at approximately 90 deg intervals over a long length. This pressure profile is said to ensure good contact across the strands in the outer layer of the cable and among the inner layers, which are arranged in an inverse helix configuration.
