摘要

The first highly charged heavy ion beams in Hungary were obtained in October 1996. The new 14.5 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source of ATOMKI produced remarkable intensity of multiply charged ion beams yet at the first experiments (e.g., charge states up to 12+ were detected for argon) just with “basic” ECR ion source configuration. Since then some further developments were carded out. A negatively biased electrode remarkably increased the intensity of the highly charged ions. The testing of the seven-elements electrostatic extraction system is continued successfully. Experimental study was done in order to find the optimal position of the mirror peaks. Visual studies and spectroscopic measurements of the visible light coming from the ECR plasma, were carried out. # 1998 American Institute of Physics. S0034-6748(98)51202-6
