Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of metallofullerene Ti-2@C-80 were measured using a synchrotron orbital radiation light source. The band intensity of the Ti-2@C-80 spectra was found to be dependent on the incident photon energy, similar to observations for other fullerenes. The spectral onset energy was 0.8 eV below the Fermi level, and was comparable to that of Ca@C-82, but smaller than that of the empty C-80. Using comparisons between UPS and molecular orbital calculations, the number of electrons transferred from the titanium atom to C-80 was estimated. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
