Hertwich Engineering has noted increasing interest in electromagnetic equipment for the movement of aluminium melts since its market introduction in 2001. This opens attractive technical and economic perspectives for melting and casting. The electromagnetic side-channel pump is mainly to be preferred when the melt does not have to be moved outside the furnace housing and when there are no substantial level differences to be bridged. Such applications are melt circulation within a furnace chamber, or circulation between two furnace chambers. The pump channel is integrated into a side-wall of the furnace, while the inductor is attached on the outside of the furnace housing. Depending on the polarity of the inductor, which is built like a linear motor, the melt is drawn into one channel opening and expelled from the other. This produces very effective bath movement throughout the furnace space. The intensity of the stirring action can be adjusted over a very wide range by power regulation. Depending on size, the maximum pump throughput amounts to between 200 and 800 t/hour.
