Nowadays, modern hot rolling mills can process slabs weighing even up to 30 tonnes in multiple stages to produce a high-grade product appropriate for the customer's needs. For this, from aluminium blocks 600 mm thick hot strips are rolled in several passes, down to typical thicknesses of between 2 and 10 mm. Specified nominal sizes must be adhered to very accurately, especially within the production line, since otherwise defects can be produced in the downstream rolling processes as the result of even small thickness and profile deviations. This demands suitable measurement technology which can determine the thickness profile already during the production process itself, as described below.
