摘要

The extra 2.1 m tpy alumina from Alcoa's expansion of the Alumar alumina refinery in Sao Luis, Brazil, will be aimed at the export market. This is because the company does not have sufficient energy supplies at a competitive cost to allow further expansion of the Alumar aluminium smelter. The alumina plant, a joint venture with Billiton Metals (36 percent) and Alcan (10 percent) will expand from 1.4 m tpy to 3.5 m tpy by 2008 in a 1.1b US dollars investment. The primary aluminium capacity of the Alumar smelter, a joint venture with Billiton Metals, will remain at around 440 000 tpy, including an increase of around 63 000 tpy via an expansion recently carried out by Alcoa.
