Nickel prices in recent weeks have pulled back to test support from theearly July lows at $10,430/tonne, but buying appeared ahead of that levellast week with lows of $10,660/tonne. Prices are now attempting to workhigher and are tackling the $11,000/tonne level. Technical indicators onthe charts are also looking stronger so it may be that the set-up is right fora rebound. If so, we should then get a better feel for how bearish overallsentiment is by seeing how long a rally can last. Given the dominant andrelentless downward trend it does look as though sentiment is bearishoverall, but at these low price levels we have to assume that high costproducers are cutting back production – the ones most affected are likelyto be the nickel pig iron producers (NPI) in China, who may not be the mostvocal about production cutbacks to protect their stakeholders. As such,the shift to a tighter market is likely to show up in the physical marketfirst, but there is no sign of that happening yet.
