Tin seems to have caught the bug from lead, as a spate of supply concerns and a technical breakout on the price charts sent prices jumping northwards to new highs on fund buying. We have watched the evolution of the triangle or pennant on the charts for some months, and we have warned that such patterns tend to conclude with a sharp break in one direction or another. Although softer fundamentals (higher stocks and improving supply from Indonesia) made a break lower seem more likely, it was actually the upside that was broken. In our weekly Base Metals Update report on Monday July 16, we noted the breakout was just starting, but it lacked conviction and looked like it would fail. However, by the Wednesday of that week, technical fund managers had arrived and forced official three-month prices to jump to new highs of 15,515 dollar/tonne.
