The market has turned out to be less depressed than expected. Manufacturing is just about holding its own, and retail volumes rose after all in the final quarter - although it has to be admitted that retailers indulged in an unprecedented frenzy of pre-Christmas cost cutting to achieve these high volumes, and revenues were not so impressive. Meanwhile, a number of big projects are keeping some sectors of the steel industry busy - mills supplying plate, merchant bars and some coil products - compensating for marginal declines elsewhere. Merchant bar is one product enjoying a boom at present. UK producers are marking January prices up by ￡7/tonne (12 dollars/tonne) and are expected to have no difficulty in collecting the increase, with perhaps a further rise later in the quarter.
