While Europe worries about avian influenza spreading from the east, eastern steel markets have been hit by another bout of "China fever". The turnaround from de-stocking in China to stock building reported last month has developed the familiar symptoms of overreaction, a rush to order some product categories and a surge in their asking prices, while the aftermath of de-stocking still depresses prices of some other products. Temporary shortages of coil of particular dimensions or other specifications have developed, and prices for small lots of these have soared, but even average prices in regional trading have put on at least 100 dollars/tonne since they plunged alarmingly in January. China's own export prices for HR coil were marked up to 480 dollars/tonne fob by the middle of March. By early April Chinese exporters were asking for over 500 dollars/tonne fob; specific offers for the Korean market were 550 dollars/tonne cif, but these were initially rebuffed.
