摘要

The turmoil in financial markets set off by the sub-prime mortgage catastrophe in the USA has affected the EU financial sector and spread nervousness across the real economy, but the EU has yet to show any signs of industrial activity turning down as a result. While the liquidity crisis and threats to the solvency of banks may have added to caution among customers of the steel industry and reinforced their reluctance to place forward orders, final use of steel has remained high. As a result, the same tight management of stocks and of re-ordering that held down price rises during most of 2007 is now working in favour of steelmakers seeking to pass on big rises in costs.
