Sichuan, located in the southwest of China, is one of the major origin sites of loquat (Eriobotra japonica) in the world, with a cultivation history of more than 2,000 years. Loquat plantations are widespread all over the province, large-scaled economic plantations being mainly located at Longquanyi, Shuangliu, Naxi, Renshou, Miyi, and Maoxian. The rapid development of Sichuan loquat industry started from the 1980s. At present, loquat industry of Sichuan is over 50,000 ha in cultivation area, over 300,000 t in production and over 250 million US dollars in output value, the first rank in China. Furthermore, the loquat industry employs about 200,000 workers. The loquat industry is playing an important role in the rural economy of Sichuan, especially in the regions with intensively cultivated plantations where the industry has become a mainstay of the local rural economy.
