We appreciate Dr. Barreira's comments to our recent article (3) and agree with his synthesis of our results in some respects. However, we believe our choice of criterion method was most appropriate for our study, considering its purpose. Our primary goal was to determine the effects of body mass index and speed on step counting accuracy in controlled and free-living environments. Therefore, we needed to use a device that would not be influenced by abdominal adiposity and positioning during these two conditions (7). Moreover, to determine differences between the ActiGraph (AG) devices, which was our secondary purpose, we sought a device that was valid and reliable at various speeds. The StepWatch 3 (SW) has been shown to be valid and reliable over a wide range of walking speeds (1,2,4,7).
