A frequencyhyphen;agile phase lock system for millimeterhyphen;wave klystrons is described. The system locks the klystron to a crystalhyphen;controlled reference signal derived from a frequency synthesizer. By programming the synthesizer, the klystron can be stepped through any sequence of frequencies lying within a band roughly 200 MHz wide. Acquisition of phase lock typically requires 1 msec. The 200hyphen;MHz pullhyphen;in range is achieved through the use of combined frequency and phase feedback; there is no rsquo;rsquo;searchrsquo;rsquo; mode. The measured linewidth of an 82hyphen;GHz phasehyphen;locked klystron is quest;10 Hz.
