The Ecological Society of Japan has been honoring the Ecological Research Paper Award for excellent papers published in the official English-language journal Ecological Research since 2000. The Editorial Board and the Ecological Society of Japan would like to announce the 23rd Ecological Research Paper Award winners chosen from Volume 37 (2022): DNA sequencing methods, which allow the rapid and economical acquisition of molecular phylogenetic data, have been advancing rapidly in recent years. The authors describe an advanced multiplex next-generation DNA-sequencing method with a complementary combination of multiplexed phylogenetic marker sequencing (MPM-seq) and multiplexed inter-simple sequence repeat genotyping by sequencing (MIG-seq) (Figure 1), which Suyama and Matsuki (2015) originally developed. This complementary combination method enables rapid, simple and economical analysis and facilitates molecular phylogenetic analysis as well as genetic differentiation and genotyping between species, hybrids and populations, and even between clones and cultivars. The paper also reports the results of molecular phylogenetic analysis of 13 Abies species (Figure 2) using this technique. In addition to the main text, detailed supporting information also provides this article extremely instructive as a technical commentary.
