On an early sunny August morning this summer ,family and relatives of Kyle Struck gathered along the shoreline of Lake Missaukee. Other than a sense of palpable anticipation in the air there was only a light wind from the northwest. The small but eager crowd was there to watch the 16-year-old perform his first solo flight in a Piper J-3 Cub airplane. Introducing three generations of seaplane pilots. Don DeRuiter, his son Derek and Don's grandson, Kyle. All three have logged hours on the same airplane. "It was pretty awesome, the only difference was being alone with less weight in the back of the plane," Kyle said. Kyle's mother has been around planes for most of her life but said the experience for her was nerve wracking. It was apparently worse for his father. "My dad didn't come up to watch because he was just too nervous," Kyle said.
