摘要

The English name for the chess piece, rook, derives from the Arabic for "elephant". That is because war elephants used to have castles on their backs. The "roc" of the Sindbad the Sailor stories is the same thing. It refers to the Elephant Bird, or Aepyornis, whose eggs are still sold to gullible tourists in Madagascar. Conophytum turrigerum has leaf-pairs shaped like a chess rook, hence the name "tower bearer". I wasted a lot of money on this beautiful plant, but after three failed attempts at keeping it I followed the wise precept "If all else fails, try reading the instructions". So I checked in Heidi's little big book and it said that the plant grows on granite. So I potted up number four specimen in a special compost composed of granite chips,Cornish grit (which is crushed and graded grey granite), and a little loam. Since then it has quadrupled in size, flowered when it should, and even survived my carelessness in letting it go down to -7°C.
