摘要

SOME FLYING BUDDIES and I were having our Friday lunch at the Waypoint Cafe at the Camarillo, California, airport (CMA) while continuing our unsuccessful attempt to solve the world's problems. Our conversation eventually shifted to a more pleasant challenge: an attempt to agree on aviation's five greatest flights. Although it was a lively and enjoyable conversation, we failed to reach a consensus. When I returned home, I sent an inquiring note to a random selection of 100 pilots on my email list. Without specifying the criteria, I asked, "What do you consider to be the greatest aviation flight of all time?" The results were most enlightening. For example, three people chose the flight made by the Enola Gay to Hiroshima on August 6,1945. A thoughtful reason given was that "it likely saved more lives than any other single flight." The Enola Gay returned to the same runway on Tinian from which it had departed, but it arrived in a different world than the one in which it had left 12 hours earlier.
