LET ME INTRODUCE YOU to Doris. My family has a tradition of naming our vehicles (cars and watercraft, so why not aircraft?). Doris is a 1969 Aero Commander Model 100, a Darter. If Doris were a family pet, "rescue dog" might come close to being an apt description. I discovered her for-sale posting on an aircraft broker's website. She was chained to her tiedowns; left out in the weather to fend for herself. The only time she flew in the years before I purchased her was to have her annual inspection performed. I took a trusted person with me and performed a prepurchase inspection. Once all the inspection panels were off, my friend became more and more excited about the airplane's condition. On the outside she was pug ugly, but in his words, "Her bones are good." After we developed a squawk list, the price was negotiated downward, and the papers were completed consummating the sale. A few weeks later a CFI and I brought her home. Initially Doris shared a "condo" hangar with a half-dozen other, much nicer aircraft. The FBO staff turned up their noses at the new arrival. I told them, "Don't worry, I'll buy some burlap to cover her up."
