It is now hoped that investment in a 220 kV cable, which promises a cheaper electricity supply for Aluminium Delfzijl, will go ahead before January 2006. The planned investment will see the laying of a new 220 kV cable from Aldel to the nearby Weiwerd station and the installation of transformers and a switching substation on the company premises in Delfzijl, with subsequent connection to the Weiwerd power supply. The investment volume is expected at around EUR 11m. Transport costs with the 110 kV connection are currently considerably higher. Power consumption will also be reduced due to lower transport losses.
