摘要

The likely closure of car manufacturer MG Rover will have dire consequences for the UK secondary aluminium industry, smelters and die casters have warned. The future of the Longbridge plant hangs in the balance as the company waits for news whether the UK government and China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) will secure a deal to save it. MG Rover, which employs around 6000 workers and which is controlled by Phoenix Venture Holdings, is also hoping the UK government will announce whether it will make a 100 million pounds bridging loan to the company. MG Rover's directors gave extensive personal commitments on April 5 to keep the deal on track, but MG Rover was forced into administration when SAIC pulled out of the deal. Dozens of die casters and engineering firms depend on supplying Rover, which is the last surviving British mass automotive producer. Some die casters rely on Rover for around 25 percent of their business and will face closure if contracts are scrapped. A potential closure would have serious knock-on effects right through the secondary aluminium supply chain.
