Exact equations are derived for mode cut-off frequencies on a W-fibre enabling the range of monomode operation of such a fibre to be accurately determined. Solutions are presented for a variety of parameters showing the influence of the refractive index and thickness of the inner cladding on the propagation characteristics of the fibre.
