The European Union has recently updated its directive regarding the levels of lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium contained within automotive components. From July 1, 2007, the new 'End of life (Vehicles)' directive will place stringent regulations on the use of these potentially hazardous materials in all new vehicles sold within the European Union. In preparation for these new regulations, Dynacast International has conducted extensive research into alternatives to chromating processes based on hexavalent chromium chemistry. The updated legislation calls for the elimination of hexavalent chromium finishes (amended from a maximum allowance of two grammes) as it is widely accepted that 'hex-chrome' compounds (CrVI) can pose a health and environmental hazard. The biggest risk is that hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen, could contaminate the water table when coated parts are disposed of in landfill sites. It also raises issues for any recycling of these components.
