Mechanical response of beta-21S alloy microstructures with fine-scale and coarser alpha phase was compared via microstructural and mechanical characterization. Results indicate that work-hardening behavior of beta-21S is a strong function of alpha size scale. Specimens with fine-scale alpha exhibited substantially higher strengths (similar to 1200 MPa) compared to those containing coarser alpha precipitates (similar to 950 MPa). Furthermore, reasonable tensile elongation values, similar to 8 pct, to failure could be achieved for these high strengths, provided grain boundary fracture can be limited.
