Some years see a step-change in technology. Cutting tool material-related examples include the development and introduction of carbides in 1923, synthesis of diamond in 1954 and the first coated carbides in 1967. Arguably, the biggest change over the last decade has come from the widespread adoption of high speed machining and the related introduction of a vast range of advanced coated carbide products, many of which utilise PVD coating technology. Parallel events include the first indexable inserts, built-in chipbreakers, etc. However; tying these down to a specific date is difficult. This is because in most cases changes are incremental and involve improvements in existing performance, which may be significant, but have less widespread or immediate impact. While taken for granted, the gradual improvements that have occurred in tool quality/consistency and reliability should not be underestimated. In reviewing tooling products over the past 12 months, the emphasis appears to have been on incremental change, yet major announcements are likely to be just around the corner with key manufacturers such as Sandvik, Kennametal, etc. showing off their R & D successes via product launches at EMO and at next April's MACH here in the UK. Having said this, the industry is obviously not standing still and there are a number of developments to report.
