St sounds exotic, ethereal, weird, interplanetary - and it even looks like the classic 'Dan Dare' vision of a flying saucer. It's a musical instrument whose trippy modal tones set my ossicles vibrating as I rambled through Montpelier's main square on a sultry storm-threatened afternoon in July It was being played by a busker, a student, I surmised - Montpelier being a big student town. Its soft, hypnotic yet percussive drone conjured up mystical, numinous connections, and I began to imagine its custodian acquiring it while backpacking through the Hindu Kush - maybe in exchange for helping with the mango harvest - where it had been hand-crafted under the guidance of a wise and wizened village shaman.
