abstract_textpIn this article the authors analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of central interdisciplinary emergency departments. In an analysis of the operational environment it is especially made clear that the importance of such central interdisciplinary emergency departments will show a disproportionate increase in the future. The strengths of a central emergency department, including its role as a single contact point for all emergency stakeholders and provision of early interdisciplinary treatment, supports the department in the achievement of its essential goal: the provision of the highest quality of emergency care for emergency patients. This emergency treatment is best provided by doctors with additional training in emergency medicine. Emergency medicine should be introduced as a separate medical specialty in Germany in order to provide highest standards of emergency treatment for emergency patients. Many simultaneous developments including increasing patient numbers, increasing knowledge in the emergency medicine sector, use of individual ideas and methods plus the pressure from scarcer resources demand this professionalisation in clinical emergency medicine.
