摘要

The mechanics and micromechanisms in fracture and fatigue have been reviewed in order to identify the different behaviours associated with short and long cracks. In particular, it is shown that the brittle-ductile transition is shifted to lower temperatures in specimens containing shallow cracks whereas the growth rate of short fatigue cracks is larger than that of long cracks. The loss of constraint in fracture and reduced crack closure in fatigue are confirmed as key factors which promote the anomalous behaviour of short cracks. The effects of these factors are analysed using recent advances in both global and local approaches to fracture.
